Podcast or Perish explores academic research through the eyes of the people who do it.

Each episode focuses on a single academic, getting right into the nitty-gritty of their work: how they gather data, how they theorize it, what they have learned, and why we should care.

The show is hosted by Cameron Graham, Professor of Accounting at York University in Toronto, and co-produced by Cameron and the talented Bert Imai of York’s Learning Technology Services. Each episode is scripted by Cameron, in cooperation with his academic guest. Bert does all the engineering and post-production, and Cameron does this website.

Produced with the support of York University.

About the Host

Cameron Graham

Cameron Graham lives and works in Toronto. Born in Edmonton, he has lived in Scarborough, Goose Bay, Trenton, Bagotville, Cold Lake, Baden Soellingen, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, and Calgary. His academic work has taken him in turn to Ottawa, Québec, Montreal, New York, Madrid, Halifax, Tampere, Paris, Innsbruck, Sydney, Amsterdam, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Hyderabad, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Stockholm, and Christchurch. Prior to becoming an academic, he worked in information systems. Prior to that, he studied theology where he developed his interest in philosophy and his passion for social justice.

In his own academic research, Cameron studies how accounting shapes our understanding of poverty, and how it is used, with decidedly mixed results, in our attempts to alleviate it. His interest in social theory and his fascination with how other academics think about the world led to the creation of this podcast.

Photos from Cameron’s travels are used on this website and on his research website, Fearful Asymmetry, where you can learn to think critically about accounting. Should you be so inclined.
